REVIEW: A well written 'how to'
for novice astronomers. The book describes pieces of
the telescope to seas of the Moon in a organized
fashion. Chapters are broken out as views of the moon
and each attraction is mapped with directions.
Historical anecdotes accompany each chapter and give
good perspective to what we are viewing. The author
respects the reader- there are no excessive words and
he assumes intelligence. It makes you want to know
more about the Moon!

Astronomical
League Lunar Club
Certificate
Earn a Certificate
for Observing 100 features on the Moon
Requirements: To qualify for the AL's Lunar
Club Certificate and pin, you need only be a member of
the Astronomical League, either through
an affiliated club or as a Member-at-Large,
and observe 100 features on the moon. These 100 features
are broken down into three groups: 18 naked eye, 46
binocular, and 36 telescopic features. Any pair of
binoculars and any telescope may be used for this
program. As a matter of fact, to prove that the Lunar
Club could be done with small apertures, we used 7x35
binoculars and a 60mm refractor.
If you would like a good recommendation for a lunar
map to use with this program, we suggest, for those of
you on a budget, "Moon Map" (S0003) by Sky
& Telescopoe for $2.95. Sky Publishing Corp. can
be reached at (800) 253-0245. For a more advanced moon
atlas, we recommend Antonin Rukl's "Atlas of the Moon"
(#18539) by Kalmbach
Publishing Co. for $29.95. Kalmbach Publishing Co.
can be reached at (800) 533-6644.
In SE Wisconsin, members of Milwaukee Astronomical
Society, Northern Cross Science Foundation (Ozaukee
County), and Racine Astronomical Society already have
membership via these groups. An at-large membership is
$25 per year (U.S.), $35 (outside U.S.)
American
Lunar Society Lunar Study & Observing
Certificate
This project was designed for those who want to move
beyond the simple observing stages. In completing the
Certificate, you will observe not just 'craters
and maria', but also sinuous rilles and
volcanoes, flooded craters and secondary
craters, arcuate rilles and mare
ridges. Further, you will come to understand just how
these features formed, and what they tell us about the
history of the moon. In short, this project will produce
competent observers, who are qualified to teach others
about the wonders of the moon. May you enjoy the learning
and the hunt. -- Eric Douglass
To earn the ALS Study and Observing Certificate one
must complete the following steps:
1. Read the article "Geologic
Processes On The Moon", which is presented in the
'General Articles' section on this web site.
2. Complete an 'open book' test over the article
"Geologic Processes On The Moon" (note: this is not a
difficult test; it is only designed to ensure that the
article was read). Passing score occurs at 80% correct
answers.
à 3. Observe
a list of objects, and
keep a log of what was seen. Only 90% of these objects
need be observed to complete this requirement.
4. Mail both the test and a copy of your log, along
with a check for $8 (processing fee) to:
Eric Douglass
10326 Tarleton Dr.
Mechanicsville, VA 23116
Your certificate will be mailed to you within 4 weeks
of arrival in my hands.
